To reacquaint oneself with Chinese poetry, one should start with Li Bai, occasionally one should also end with Li Bai.

I started translating Li Bai’s poems 6 years ago indulgently and mostly for amusing my readers with the English renditions of those household namesake lines. From a ballad variation of “月下独酌/Tumbling Down the Moon” to three versions of “静夜思/Mooning”, I wish to capture the flowy, luminous impressions and savoir faire of the original verse.

That is to say, before my producer urged me to translate more, this work came alive partially thanks to her.

Li Bai writes in natural and unrestrained verses that cannot separate romance from romanticism, while harping about the ideal place and ideal time, with wine, always.

For now we can celebrate his verses with more wine, what’s more priceless than the glowing moon inside the glowing cup?

但使主人能醉客，不知何处是他乡。
